Opinion By R. Al Bain
I see that many Michigan Republican legislators are endorsing Mitt Romney as the presidential candidate for 2012. This is just another in a series of endorsements of Republican candidates by so-called Republicans that proves just how broke the Republican Party is! What is the difference between Romneycare and Obamacare? Obamacare was modeled after Romneycare! I knew in 2008 after Romney suddenly dropped out of the presidential running after the West Virginia primary that he was told by the power brokers of the party that he would be their guy in 2012 – for 2008 was John McCain’s turn. Oh the web’s they weave!

It’s all in the family or should I say country club click. You see Mitt Romney’s father George Romney, who was a three-term Governor of Michigan and lead proponent of the adoption for Michigan’s state income tax with Public Act 281 in 1967. George Romney also ran for president in 1967. While Romney was born in Mexico, he was still considered to be a viable and legal candidate to run for president. His Mormon grandfather and his three wives fled to Mexico in 1886, but none of them ever relinquished their citizenship. While the Constitution does provide that a president must be a natural born citizen, the first Congress of the United States in 1790 passed legislation stating: “The children of citizens of the United States that may be born beyond the sea, or outside the limits of the United States, shall be considered as natural-born citizens of the United States.” Romney and his family fled Mexico in 1912 prior to the Mexican revolution. However, the Naturalization Act of 1795 repealed the Act of 1790 and removed the language explicitly stating that the children of US citizens are natural-born citizens. As such, it is inconclusive whether Romney was eligible for the office of President.

As a true conservative Republican adhering to the founding principles, traditions, and values that the party was founded upon I find these endorsements of such candidates as Mitt Romney, Pete Hoekstra, and others with questionable character traits very troubling to say the least! This Republican can not and will not vote for so-called Republicans just for the sake of voting on the Republican ticket! Principles matter!

A Tale of Two Bridges
Why build a new bridge when there’s already a perfectly fine one? Because the new one would be paid for by taxpayers. What do you do if you lose 25 percent of your population in a decade, bringing your city to a 100-year low, and you have a perfectly good private bridge? Well, why not have the taxpayers build a new $5.3 billion bridge using public money! It may sound strange but that is exactly what a combination of unions, government officials, and businesses are trying to do in Michigan. The project is called the Detroit River Intentional Crossing (DRIC), currently being promoted as the New International Trade Crossing, and would connect Southeast Michigan to Canada. The problem is there is already a privately owned bridge — therefore no cost to taxpayers — two miles away called the Ambassador Bridge. But if not built what would become of all the cronyism such as kickbacks, campaign contributions, and such for our legislators? One look at the expansion of the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron with it’s cost overruns and the lack of traffic that studies at the time claimed should about sum it up!

Lutz knows that when the product line-up is stale, you’ve got to start fresh, be bold, and give people something they can be passionate about. That’s as true in politics as it is in cars. Clark Durant initiated Hillsdale College’s very influential letter of opinion, “Imprimis”, in order to take the ideas of freedom, self government, business, politics, and culture. In October of 1983, President Ronald Reagan nominated Clark to serve on the board of the Legal Services Corporation, a highly controversial agency designed to provide legal services to the poor. Twenty years ago Clark founded the immensely successful Cornerstone Schools in Detroit which has a 95% graduation rate versus a 32% graduation rate for Detroit Public Schools!

Who is Pete Hoekstra today? Pork Barrel Pete or Tea Party Pete?
For a guy who brags about being a founding member of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress, it was fascinating to see Pete Hoekstra thumping his chest over adding $2.3 million to the federal debt. But there he is, in an Video from February. In the video, Hoekstra is caught preening before the Muskegon Area Chamber of Commerce, in full peacock mode over putting pork in a federal highway spending bill ladled with $26.4 million in the kind of earmarks that have since been banned by Congress. What roads, streets or freeways did those highway funds build or repair? Well, says Hoekstra, that’s the funny part. “We tore down a mall with highway funding,” he snickered, adding: “I don’t know how it’s working for the highway system.”

Hoekstra Anounced Senate Run from Bernie Madoff’s Law Firm
Pete Hoekstra, who supported giving billions in bailouts to Wall Street, not only went to work for the law firm that defended convicted felon Bernie Madoff but announced his campaign to defeat U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow from the firm’s law offices. The press is calling this bad “optics” on the part of Hoekstra, but his record of support for Wall Street CEOs, Big Banks and Big Oil suggests something else, blindness to the plight of Michigan’s middle class families. Just for starters, Hoekstra voted to give Big Oil companies $2.6 billion in taxpayer subsidies and voted to help big banks while taking $32,725 in campaign donations from them. But when it came to middle-class families, Hoekstra refused to support an exemption from the Alternative Minimum Tax for 21 million Americans. Any question about whose side Pete’s on? Hoekstra defends his decision to sign on to work for the DC-based Dickstein Shapiro law firm, saying he started working there after the firm defended Madoff, who was convicted of 15 counts in a massive billion Wall Street Ponzi scheme.

So, Pete, with all the firms that an important guy like you with gold-plated access could work for you chose the firm that sided with Bernie Madoff? Playing on both sides of the political fence at the same time isn’t new for Hoekstra. You will recall that during his losing GOP primary campaign for governor in 2010, our hero turned up alongside President Obama with shovel in hand to break ground on a new advanced battery plant near Holland a plant built, in part, with federal funding that Hoekstra bitterly opposed. Until it was time to mug for the cameras. Hoekstra was bragging last winter to the Muskegon chamber about his spending spree. When Hoekstra was bragging last winter to the Muskegon chamber about his spending spree, he was cemented in place as a Washington, DC lobbyist. At the time, hypocrisy probably seemed like pretty safe territory for lobbyist Hoekstra. But what about now when Hoekstra is kissing Tea Party butt again? Will he be Pork Barrel Pete or Tea Party Pete? With his past 18 years of being part of the problem in Washington I’d put my money on Pork Barrel Pete not Tea Party Pete!

Senate leader Richardville does not want “right-to-work” in Michigan
No surprise here! The Republican leader of the state Senate says he has no interest in making Michigan a right-to-work state. Make no mistake Richardville will try to appease the majority of those who support RTW with half measures such as RTW for teachers only. But with his alledged ties to former convicted Michigan Carpenters Union Boss Walter Ralph Mabry making the whole state of Michigan a RTW state will be a tall task if Richardville has anything to say about it!

Senate Leader Supports Right to Work For Teachers But not the State of Michigan
This is akin to picking winners and losers! Richardville has Voted for Forced Unionization in the Past! He has supported union legislation. As a recent example, he co-sponsored Senate Bill 731 in 2009 in 2009, legislation that would transfer $6.6 million in taxpayer money to the SEIU government employee union. It did it by creating a government “employer” for about 42,000 individuals who are hired by elderly or disabled Medicaid recipients. The Mackinac Center has filed a lawsuit over a similar set- up involving home day care providers. What’s the difference between day-care providers and home health-care providers and Teachers? I’ll tell you, the MEA union is backing the re-call against him! He is abusing his political power to punish those who would oppose him! I have witnessed this right here in Monroe County with the filing of a false police report against a conservative republican who opposed his liberal views. Richardville also said he didn’t support right-to-work for the entire state, saying he didn’t think it would “transition the economy.” The reason for that statement is that he knows he will not get campaign contributions from this union but will continue receiving from the others if left alone! We had Slick Willie now we have Slick Richie!

Michigan’s Political Power, Central Planning, and Subsidy’s
At the state level, every Michigan governor since the 1940s has embraced another form of the central planning approach called “industrial policy,” hoping to “diversify” and “expand” the state’s economy. Today’s version is incorrectly labeled “economic development” by politicians, and correctly called “corporate welfare” by most regular people. The practice reached a bipartisan crescendo here under recent legislatures and former Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who together morphed discriminatory, selective business tax break programs into outright cash handouts, giving away hundreds of millions of dollars to corporations and developers selected by politicians and political appointees. Current Gov. Rick Snyder is scaling it back, but by no means has he abandoned the concept.

Green Energy Mandates and Cap on Competition Blamed for Michigan’s High Energy Cost
Michigan’s electric rates are the highest among its neighboring states. According to the most recent data available from the U.S. Energy Information Agency (EIA), for May, Michigan’s rates were 14.5 percent above the regional average, and 5.8 percent above the national average. Hillsdale College economics professor Gary Wolfram, a spokesperson for the competitive energy providers, asserted that House Bill 5524 and Senate Roll Call 557  is “primarily designed to provide a monopoly of energy production for Detroit Edison and Consumers Energy.” Contrary to the false letters to the editor here in Monroe by Senator Richardville supporters claiming he has been a tax cutter for his constituents, he in fact voted in favor of this monopoly and tax increase! Gee, you think it had anything to do with campaign contributions?

The Green Jobs Myth
Imagine if the Legislature imposed a windmill and solar energy mandate on electric utilities that required many more workers to produce the same amount of power and also increased your annual electric bills by around $100. (Actually, it already did — 2007 Senate Bill 213; House vote here, and Senate vote here.)

Scamming You, The Taxpayer, with Stipends, Subsidies, and Assistance
This speaks to where just some of our tax dollars are going and the abuses that go with it! This is why we need to pay more taxes! CBS removed this video from YouTube, but I’ve found another copy watch it quick before it’s gone, and send to all. Must watch this! You have to watch this video of Judge Judy before it’s removed- it’s actually a guy from St Paul , MN . It will tick you off especially after our government has been shut down. Unbelievable. This is why our taxes should be raised? Multiply this by the many millions who receive this kind of taxpayer subsidty’s and you get the picture.

“The only foundation of a free Constitution is pure Virtue, and if this cannot be inspired into our People in a greater Measure, than they have it now, they may change their Rulers and the forms of Government, but they will not obtain a lasting liberty.”
John Adams
