Opinion By R. Al Bain
                                                             Mass Transit Tax Hike

The proposed milage (TAX HIKE) for the Grand Rapids Transit or any public transportation system in Michigan should go down to defeat!  The dire straights citizens are facing with the economic climate of over taxation, rising cost of fuel and food, job losses, home foreclosures, education cut’s, we can ill afford more tax dollars to support public transportation that is not an efficient use of our tax dollars.

Two different studies were done on public transportation in the past one by a former Michigan State Representative that found it would be cheaper for the taxpayer’s to call a cab for the few who ride these buses. Another study done by a Florida Representative went a step further and found it would be cheaper to hire a limo service for these same riders. When taking into consideration the cost associated with maintaining this system, driver’s-mechanics salaries, benefit’s, plus the garage’s and maintenance of the buses themselves are mind-boggling!

A better idea would be to borrow a phrase from the TV show “Cash Cab” and have the few that ride these buses who have Cable TV, Cell Phones, and other amenities, to do a shout out and call a friend!

New Public Detroit River Bridge would be Unconstitutional
If the State of Michigan were to attempt to construct and operate another bridge over the Detroit River between Detroit and Windsor to compete with the Ambassador Bridge, either on its own or pursuant to an arrangement with Canada, there would be a direct conflict between the action of the State of Michigan and the 1921 Special Act of Congress. Whenever there is a direct conflict between the action of a state and a law of Congress, under the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, the action of the state is unconstitutional as pre-empted by federal law.

A Double Dip Recession May Be Inevitable
It has only taken a few weeks, but the chances of a double dip recession have increased. The term is mentioned more often in the media and in speeches by economists. Several large companies have said that their margins and sales may be hurt by inflation.

Reasserting Federalism in Defense of Liberty
Our founders well understood that our liberty could not be preserved without frequently referring back to first principles. But while they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor to defend those principles, we have often taken them for granted, as we have become complacent in thinking that government will take care of every problem.

Puppy train your elected officials
A little while ago you heard from my colleague Ken Braun who gave you a primer on “politician puppy training”. It is one of the best analogies I’ve ever heard about holding your elected officials accountable for their actions.

A frightening satellite tour of America’s Foreclosure
This gives an idea of all deep cutting the recession has been on a national basis. RealtyTrac is out with the total foreclosure numbers for 2010. On the whole things are getting worse. 72 percent of major metro areas saw an increase in foreclosure volume Although some of the worst hit areas in Nevada, California and Florida improved from 2009, the foreclosure rate in these areas remains shockingly high. If not for some foreclosure suspensions due to the robosigning scandal, these numbers would have been higher. For a frightening way to visualize the foreclosure crisis see the map in the link below.
