Opinion By R. Al Bain
Where are we headed here in Michigan? The citizens are strapped with over taxation, lousy job market, property devaluation, over regulation, high energy cost, rising food cost, and a host of poor representation out of our elected officials. Legislation to give tax breaks and subsides to big business by our legislators all on the backs of the taxpaying citizens of Michigan under the guise of job creation. Where are these jobs?
Oh they say it will take time but it sure doesn’t take time for the tax increase to show up even before one job is created. Also at a time the citizens can least afford it utility companies are getting approval for rate increases out of Lansing. These increases they say are needed for the energy optimization program. As so the common citizen can understand what this program is I have a sneaky suspicion that it has something to do with subsidizing with taxpayer dollars green energy programs such as solar and wind.
Reports are coming out that these companies subsidized with millions of tax dollars for failed programs such as solar and wind are dropping like fly’s because they can’t compete and be competitive around the globe. So who are the losers? That’s right the taxpayers who’s tax dollars subsidize them! Let’s see, we as a country and state are broke, in debt, people are losing their home’s, job’s, and are struggling to maintain a meger lifestyle for themselves and their family. But big business gets a tax break we get a pension tax! Liberal newspapers and local officials advocate a tax for Museums, Road Taxes, and a host of other taxes to the already overburdened taxpayers.
The bottom line is Michigan government “should and must” cut the size and scope of an oversized and over bloated government and the failed programs and entity’s they have created over the years which they do not have the political will to do. How can you cut the indigent poor who truly need help but continue to subsidize businesses such as Michigan International Speedway to the tune of millions of dollars? How can we the taxpayers afford to subsidize the Hotel and Tourism industry with the Pure Michigan advertising campaign when the industry itself doesn’t see the benefit for them to fund it?
Although the economic climate has a lot to do with our problems the citizens and voters of Michigan share a large portion of the blame in how and who they send to Lansing! If we consistently keep sending the same one’s who have helped in creating these problems back to represent us expecting a different result, we will be doomed to failure!
New Bridge – DRIC Jobs, Jobs….Oooops, No Jobs
What a disgrace! However, it is hardly unexpected. You know all of the hype. We were told about the 12,000 direct and indirect jobs that the DRIC project would create. Oh happy days are here again. I am not sure that this number represents jobs on both sides of the border or on each side but it really doesn’t matter. Gajillions of jobs that will make everybody happy. That is what the DRIC-ites promise. Even workers with little or no experience can expect income packages totaling about $40 an hour! Except here’s the reality. All they want is experienced heavy equipment operators. What it says to me is that we are being fed a pile of BS and so are the Michigan Legislators.
New Detroit-Windsor Crossing May Get Packaged with Other Bridges
Governor Snyder is not tossing in the towel, even though he does not have the votes in the Senate to build the bridge. Here’s the new strategy. Senator Randy Richardville wants to include 167 other bridge projects around the state hoping that those local lawmakers will vote for their bridge while voting for the Detroit-Windsor bridge at the same time. So Senator Richardville wants to hold the taxpayers hostage if their representatives don’t vote yes, the existing bridges in their communities won’t get repaired! I’ve seen this same type of strategy by the politicians in Lincoln Park with the roads there, if you don’t pass the millage we will let them fall apart till you do. Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley has been quoted as saying “We’re going to get this project done. This bridge will get built,” in regard to the new crossing! That’s representation of the citizens who don’t want this that these politicians can take to the bank in political contributions and kickbacks one way or the other! Government does not belong in the bridge business it’s better left to private enterprises.
Allen Park to Levy Taxes because of Film Subsidy
Tuesday night the City Council approved to add two millages to the Nov. 8 ballot. A public safety millage passed with a 5-2 vote, with Tina Gaworecki and Kevin Rourke dissenting. The second millage approved for the ballot is a debt retirement millage to help pay for the 104-acre lot next to City Hall that formerly housed the Allen Park Studio Center. It passed in a 6-1 vote, with Gaworecki dissenting. Unity Studios moved out of Allen Park the studio moved to Detroit to a designated enterprise tax exempt zone. The city grossly overpaid for the property to the tune of 27 million dollars to house this studio now the taxpayers are asked to pick up the tab! Film Producers subsidy’s and the Pure Michigan Advertising campaign both huge failure’s for the taxpaying citizens of Michigan. By the way how did all you taxpayers enjoy the Pure Michigan 400 race at MIS? I hope you did because your tax dollars funded it!

Michigan Taxpayers Fork Over $912K for Video Game
Michigan taxpayers will give one company about $912,000 for it to make two video games under the state’s 42 percent film tax incentive program. The Michigan Film Office has approved tax incentives to BH Golfing Games Productions so it can make the Ben Hogan games, according to the film office’s 2010 annual report.
Granholm the Tax Cutter? NOT!
Fresh off being the governor of the state that led the nation with the highest unemployment for 49 consecutive months, former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm wrote an op-ed piece for the Huffington Post about how she thought the United States could create jobs. And now, Granholm is portraying herself as an expert on tax cuts and declaring that Milton Friedman, Adam Smith and Ronald Reagan were wrong about economics. But James Hohman, assistant director of fiscal policy at the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, said Granholm’s record on tax cuts is hardly how she portrays it. He took a look at the major taxes that accounted for $20 billion of the $26 billion in state resources and found no evidence of tax cuts by Granholm.
Vote Out All Incumbents
By not voting for incumbents, taxpayers save a fair amount of money in long-term legislative benefits, and (most important) will severely minimize campaign fund-raising and corporate/special-interest influences. Political’s as usual will be substantially reduced.

UBS to Cut 3,500 Jobs; Which Banks Could Be Next?
Banking giant UBS announced Tuesday that it would trim 3,500 people from its workforce. The announcement is just the latest in a string of other layoffs made by large banks. Credit Suisse announced job cuts in June. Bank of America recently said it would cut 3,500 people. HSBC could cut as many as 30,000 people. A logical question is which financial firms will add to the long lists of layoffs?
Social Security Pushed To Brink Of Insolvency
New congressional estimates say the trust fund that supports Social Security disability will run out of money by 2017, leaving the program unable to pay full benefits, unless Congress acts. Social Security’s much larger retirement fund is projected to run dry as well. With as many people collecting fraudulently I wouldn’t be at all surprised if not sooner!
I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
